Cuddle Therapy for Men in York Safe Human Connection
For many men as we age, we physically touch others less and less. Safe, appropriate human touch is not something we think about very much and yet, it is a large part of feeling happy in life and better connected to the world as a human being. Unlike in Europe where hugs and cheek kisses are offered as a greeting, it’s different in the UK. Hugs and close physical contact can become less common and even disappear from our lives. Big life changes like retirement, living alone, separation, divorce or simply having fewer social contacts can all mean less safe, friendly, necessary touch. Cuddle therapy offers a different way to experience human connection. It provides a calm, private space where you can enjoy safe, consensual, non-sexual touch to feel more human again.
What is Cuddle Therapy?
Cuddle therapy is a professional wellbeing service based on safe, appropriate, mutual human touch. It provides you with much needed comfortable human connection. You and your qualified therapist remain fully clothed throughout the session, and clear boundaries are agreed. Those boundaries include all touch being non-sexual during a cuddle therapy session with no expectation of physical intimacy. You remain in control and can change your body position, ask for more or less contact with your therapist, ask for more or less pressure to be applied or stop the session at any time. The aim of a cuddle therapy session is simply to provide you a safe and comfortable space where you can relax, feel connected and enjoy some positive human contact. For men over 50, it can offer that missing, safe, consensual human connection and contact that does becomes less common as men get older. In other words, we offer you comfortable, professional, physical contact without any of the pressures of a close personal relationship.
Why do Men Over 50 Need to be Touched?
Life can become overly stressful at any age. At 50+ you may be dealing with work pressure, considering retirement, caring for elderly parents, have become single again or simply be overstretched by the constant demands of everyday life. Long periods of stress can leave you feeling physically and emotionally drained and some can suffer a burnout. Burnout symptoms include low energy, poor sleep, feeling detached and finding it harder to cope. Cuddle therapy is not a cure for burnout, but it is safe, necessary touch that can help people feel calmer and more relaxed which can help us avoid a burnout situation.
There can also be times when you feel lonely. even when other people are around. Compassionate, appropriate human contact can provide a sense of connection for you again that conversation alone does not always give. For senior men, simply sitting close and in gentle contact with another or back-to-back with another person, perhaps holding hands, or sharing a reassuring hug can feel very comforting and uplifting.
What Happens During a Cuddle Therapy Session?
First contact will usually be a warm welcoming handshake. Then the cuddle therapy session starts with a good conversation about your specialist subject, that being you. We begin by getting to know each other at bit. You can express how you are feeling in the comfortable, private and confidential space of the Relaxation Room in York if you wish to. You can also discuss what sort of touch you are comfortable with and ask questions before anything happens. Your full consent to any touching is very important throughout the session. Your therapist should explain the non-sexual touching boundaries clearly and always respect your choices.
The session can involve sitting together side-by-side or back-to-back on a sofa, in gentle appropriate contact. It can progress when you are ready and request it to gently, respectfully holding hands, a comfortable hug or some other agreed form of non-sexual touching. You do not have to do anything that feels uncomfortable to you. You can also spend time talking, relaxing to quiet music or simply being quiet in each other’s company. There is no pressure to perform any task or explain yourself. You are simply there to be with an understanding, empathetic, professional and touch appropriately when you wish to do so.
Safety Consent & Clear Professional Boundaries
Professional cuddle therapy will always put safety, consent and clear boundaries first. Intimate touching, requests for intimacy, kissing on the lips or touching private areas are not part of cuddle therapy. Your therapist will have clear terms, appropriate boundaries that have been agreed with you and strict privacy and confidentiality rules. This means we will always have your wellbeing and feelings foremost in our mind. We are here to help you relax, feel comfortable and connected again, just like you use to be.
For a man who has never tried cuddle therapy, the idea may seem unusual at first. That is perfectly normal and understandable. Cuddle therapy is not about replacing friendships or relationships. It is simply a structured practice that can uplift to your wellbeing through you experiencing safe, respectful human connection and at the same time enjoying a little “me time” to simply relax.
