Thigh Stiffness – Massage for Release of Tension in Hamstrings

Massage has been proven to be helpful in the management of pain in the hamstrings. Your hamstrings are 3 muscles at the back of your thigh. They are in constant use when ever you are on your feet or doing sport. You can damage your hamstring by overzealous exercise or by being overweight.

Dynamic massage therapy helps people manage painful or stiff hamstrings. The hamstrings are a group of muscles lying between the hip and the knee at the back (posterior) of the thigh. These are in use when you are walking, running or doing any other sporting activity and must be in good working order. Tight, painful hamstrings and other damage can occur for a number of reasons, especially to active and overweight people.

Relaxing Dynamic Massage for Tense, Stiff or Painful Thighs

It has been proven tightness in your hamstrings can be relieved with some simple massage techniques. D Hopper et al (2005) studied and number of sports people and found that massage therapy (DSTM Dynamic Soft Tissue Manipulation) improved the flexibility of the hamstrings. Positive reactions were seen from Swedish but, more so from DSTM techniques. These specialised techniques include;

  • Effleurage to warm up the tissues.
  • Palpation (touching and feeling for hard, tense muscle tissue).
  • Lifting the leg up to the therapist’s shoulder height to tighten the hamstring.
  • Use of the fist in longitudinal (downward) strokes (behind the knee to the buttocks) to push out toxins and relax tension in the areas identified as tight during palpation.

 

Also D Behm PhD et al (2014) says massage is beneficial to stiffness and pain under pressure in the hamstrings. Additionally, Guo J et al (2017) concludes in Shanghai University of Sport review massage alleviates delayed onset muscle soreness. So there quite a lot of scientific proof of massage works out there.

Where and What are the Hamstrings

The hamstrings are a group of 3 muscles in the back of the upper leg or thigh area. There are 3 main muscles that make up the hamstrings. These are (from lateral to medial or outside to inside); biceps femoris, semitendinosis and semimembranosis.

  • Biceps femoris long head – this is the larger and more superior (near the surface) of the 2 parts of this muscle.
  • Biceps femoris short head
  • Semitendinosis
  • Semimembranosis

Why are the Hamstrings so Important?

The suppleness of this muscle group is vital to movement. To walk, run, cycle or participate in any other sports, your thighs have to be in good working order. D Hopper et al (2005) tells us, to perform better during any of these activities you have to have good flexibility and extensibility there. It is pretty obvious that if you are in pain due to strains or tight hamstrings, movement using your legs will not be that great. 

Causes of Damaged and Painful Hamstrings

Sporting injuries are a major culprit here. It is common knowledge that damage to the hamstring can take place during the sever stresses of competition. DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) is also caused by strenuous exercise. Additionally, being overweight can effect your hamstrings. If your legs are carrying a lot of weight whenever your move, damage and strains can occur. Overzealous stretching of your thighs can also damage them. If your muscles are cold then you can damage yourself if you stretch them too hard. It is often best to stretch gently as you warm up, increasing the stretches as your muscles, ligaments and tendons get more flexible, rather than pulling them too hard. Just like other materials (rubber for example) body tissues flexibility increases as they get warmer.

What Deep Tissue Massage (DTM) is Explained – Definition, Benefits, Strokes and Tools

Deep tissue massage stroke using elbowDeep tissue massage is different to Swedish style treatments. It has all the benefits of Swedish massage and some added ones too. Deep tissue massage, also known in the industry as D.T.M., uses different types of strokes, slowly applying high pressure to underlying, deeper tissues. The parts of the body used by the masseur to provide a deeper massage are the same as with Swedish with some additions.

What is Deep Tissue Massage?

The name of the style, Deep Tissue Massage (DTM), is exactly what it says it is. It uses high-pressure strokes to reach deeper body tissues (muscles that lie under other muscles for example). It can also involve using sustained pressure to reach these deeper layers. Riggs A. (2007) says a common misconception about deep tissue work is, it has to be painful for you to benefit from it. This is not so. You can go deep without discomfort if you are in constant contact with your client. For added benefits DTM also involves the lengthening and shortening muscles before work is done on them. It aims to positively change the structure of tissues. This results in more movement in what were restricted muscles or joints you may have.

What Benefits Does DTM have?

  • Deep massage will give you all the benefits of a therapeutic Swedish massage and more.
  • Also respected massage therapist and author Riggs A. (2007) tells us of increased relaxation and longer lasting benefits.
  • Romanowski at al (2012) from Poznan University of Medical Sciences says DTM was significant better therapy than Swedish massage.
  • Deep Tissue therapy works well for pain management. This is reported by Law L. Dr et al (2008) in the study does at Graduate Program in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science, The University of Iowa. Also proven by Majchrzycki M. (2013) study of 59 patients with lower back pains at Department of Nursing, Poznan University of Medical Sciences.
  • Lowers blood pressure and hearth rate. KAYE A. M.D. Ph.D. D.A.B.P.M. et al (2008) proves this in the study of 263 people with muscles spasms and or pain.

What is Different About DTM?

Lets use Swedish (therapeutic) massage strokes as a comparison. Generally in Swedish massage strokes are made in the direction of venous blood flow. This is so that no damage is done to the veins, which have valves in allowing blood to flow only toward the heart.

With deep tissue massage this is not always the case. So, to prevent damage when working in the other direction (away from the heart, opposite to venous blood flow) slow strokes and oblique pressure are used, with deep pressure.

Strokes Used in DTM

Deep Tissue using elbow and fistThe first thing that must happen is tissues being worked on must be warm. So effleurage is used to do this. You must introduce the deeper pressure slowly, allowing pressure to build. If you go with high pressure from the start, this will disturb your client and cause them pain. You need to be in constant contact with the client to find their personal boundaries. The aim is to help your client not to harm them.

Romanowski et al (2012) tells us strokes in DTM use oblique pressure (diagonal stokes not straight onto bones but at an angle to them), lengthening stokes (in the direction the muscles lengthen) and cross-fibre (perpendicular to the direction of muscle fibres, across the muscle) strokes. When you feel a small areas of tension in a muscle (called a trigger point) you apply high-pressure to it. Then use strokes away from that tight spot in muscle.

  • Oblique strokes ensure that pressure applied still allows blood to flow through veins.
  • Lengthening strokes are used to stretch muscles in the correct direction of movement.
  • Cross-fibre strokes release muscles that are close together to make them move passed each other more smoothly.
  • Finding and applying high-pressure to a trigger point will release that tight point in a tight muscle.
  • Once released further work away from it will maintain the relaease for a longer period.
Tools Used in DTM

Not only are the strokes used different but, the tools used to provide a deeper massage are also different. In Swedish massage generally the fingers, thumbs and palms of the hands are used. These are great for the purpose of releasing tension in superficial tissues just under the skin. With deep tissue these tools are used alongside others too. To give more pressure to strokes the knuckles, fist, forearms and elbows are also used.

What Back Muscles Can Cause My Back to Hurt?

Picture of a mans back musclesThere are lots of different muscles in the back that can cause issues. We look at the biggest first the trapezius. Then we investigate the latissimus dorsi muscle just below it. Lastly we look at the rhomboids that lie beneath the trapezius.

Trapezius Muscle of the Back

The largest one is the trapezius. This is a triangular (actually trapezoid thus its name) shaped muscle running from the base of the skull, to lower spine and across the upper back from the spine to the outer shoulder blade on both sides.This muscle is a major player in upper back aches. It can hold onto your stress as tension. Massage around and up and down over it can help this.

Latissimus Dorsi Muscle - Arm and Shoulder Aid

At the base of the trapezius running down the sides of the back are the latissimus dorsi muscles. This large flat muscle helps with shoulder and arm movements. With arms and shoulder constantly in motion they can remain tense. Pulling massage strokes, rubbing them up and down, and circular stokes can relieve tension here.

Rhomboids - By Shape and Name

Under the trapezius the muscles are the rhomboids. These are 2 sets of muscles either side of the spine called rhomboid major and minor. They run from the inner shoulder blades to the spine. Both of these muscles are used when you pull your shoulder blades together across your back and help with scapula rotation. Deep tissue massage work with a fist and deep pressure can be required to get to the muscle. This can then help to loosen the tissues and sooth aches and pains.
